The Mullen ONE

Those that attended Work Truck Week 2023 might have already seen the new Class 1 EV cargo van from Mullen Automotive, the Mullen ONE. Mullen first revealed the vehicle at the show in Indianapolis alongside its Class 3 low cab forward, Mullen THREE.

Since then, Mullen has received a purchase order from Randy Marion Automotive Group (RMA) out of North Carolina, for 6,000 Mullen ONE vans. RMA also ordered 1,000 Mullen THREE EVs and 22 Mullen CAMPUS vehicles, a slightly smaller van with the same DNA as the Mullen ONE, purpose-built for microenvironments. Mullen (alongside RMA) has already delivered 39 Mullen CAMPUS EV cargo vans to various companies and anticipates multiple deliveries of its vehicles over the coming months.

Mullen touts the Mullen ONE vehicle as the first of its kind to hit the US market—meaning the first Class 1 electric cargo van. So what is it about this vehicle that makes it special? Keep reading to find out.

POWER OF ONE

The Mullen ONE is a Class 1 electric cargo van designed to maximize cargo space and payload while breezing through residential neighborhoods and cruising around narrow city streets. It has a 60-kW motor and a 42-kWh battery that offer a range of 110 miles. The Mullen ONE is level 2 charging capable at 6.6kW, with an estimated charge time of 7.5 hours. Further, the Mullen ONE includes regenerative braking technology, increasing battery state of charge in last-mile delivery environments.

The Mullen ONE can accommodate a payload of 1,683 lbs and a cargo capacity of 157 cu ft—that’s 20% more cargo capacity than the average vehicle in its segment. The Mullen ONE features a 120-inch wheelbase and offers a turning radius of only 20 ft. And because the vehicle is only 6.5-ft tall, fleet drivers can park it in their garage overnight.

Mullen Automotive uses a lithium iron phosphate battery pack in its Mullen ONE. The electric motor produces 80 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque with a top speed of 65 mph.

FOR THE DRIVER

Equipped with three cupholders, a four-way manual driver seat, adjustable headrests, a floor console, power locks and windows, air conditioning, sun visors, and cargo tie down hooks, the Mullen ONE electric work van includes all the necessary features of a classic work vehicle—with none of the emissions.

Additionally, standard interior features of the Mullen ONE include analog gauges and a digital information cluster. Charge devices with an auxiliary power outlet and a USB port. Further, busy fleet drivers will appreciate the Mullen ONE’s remote keyless entry, allowing them to open doors without fiddling with keys.

Finally, safety features include rear Park Distance Control sensors to prevent accidents. The Mullen ONE also features a pedestrian alert, rearview camera, hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and a full-size spare tire.

IN THE FIELD

The Mullen EV Van has already proven itself in the field through pilot programs—one of which was conducted at LAX with Menzies Aviation, a company that provides ground, air cargo, and fuel services to airports and airplanes. The 60-day Mullen pilot program used the all-electric van in both cargo and passenger configurations. The program saw the vans drive more than 1,500 miles across LAX within the 60-day period.

During that time, the Mullen EV vans delivered a performance of 100% uptime with no maintenance issues—equating to an estimated cost savings of 66% compared to gas-equivalent vehicles. The vehicles also demonstrated an estimated 83% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to gas-equivalent vehicles.

Mullen is now taking orders for the Mullen ONE, and deliveries of Mullen’s commercial vehicles have already begun. The Mullen ONE starts at $34,500 and is eligible for the $7,500 Commercial Clean Vehicle Credit.
