Survey Reveals Industry is Working Overtime

ALMOST HALF OF PEOPLE WORK MORE THAN 50 HOURS PER WEEK

VMAC surveyed over 1,000 people in the mobile compressed air industry; results showed that 47% of survey respondents log more than 50 hours of work each week. The US Department of Labor and the Canada Labour Code define full-time employment as 40 hours of work per week. This means almost half of the industry is working the equivalent of an extra 8-hour workday each week.

Mike Pettigrew, VMAC marketing manager, says VMAC learned that the workweek is closer to 50 hours for most. “At VMAC, it’s our mission to ensure our air compressors and multi-power systems are ready to keep up with our customers, providing reliable air and power on demand, ensuring those long workdays stay productive,” Pettigrew says.

VMAC gathered this data from 1,058 people surveyed in October 2021. Almost 60% of survey respondents reported working 45 hours or more. One in four (26%) respondents shared that they work more than 60 hours per week. Additionally, one in 10 (10%) work double the national standard, at over 80 hours per week. Only 17% of respondents reported they work less than 35 hours per week.

“We know that the industry is strong with plenty of work to be done, and we know our customers are logging 10 to 12 hours a day,” Pettigrew says. “We have a tire service customer in Ontario with a three-truck fleet upfitted with UNDERHOOD™ air compressors. His business services over 5,000 trucks a year. He told us that he saves 4 minutes on every tire, which is a savings of about 333 hours every year. We take pride knowing that VMAC’s rotary screw air compressors help him invest more time in his business, visit more customers, and spend more time with his family.”

VMAC released this research as the latest in its one-question polls series; the series covers air compressor lifespan as well as daily air compressor usage. Additionally, VMAC’s annual State Of The Mobile Compressed Air Industry Survey, is now open.
