The Greenest and Meanest Light-Duty Pickups of 2019

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy released its 23rd GreenerCars ratings for consumer vehicles, and the results might surprise you. There are no trucks on the list of this year’s greenest cars; the list consists only of electric-powered and hybrid vehicles. However, GreenerCars.org also compiled a list of practical options in each class among widely available automatic transmission gasoline-powered models. The Greener Choices list includes conventional vehicles and traditional hybrids, but excludes plug-in hybrids and pure battery EVs given the limited availability of charging stations.

A single pickup truck made this list: the Ford Ranger.

Vehicles on the list received an environmental damage index (EDX) that reflects the cost to human health from air pollution associated with vehicle manufacturing, the production and distribution of fuel or electricity, and vehicle tailpipes. They also received an overall Green Score. The midsize pickup Ranger is the 10th greenest vehicle on this list, receiving an EDX of 1.48 and an overall Green Score of 43.

GreenerCars.org also provided a Meanest List made up of gasoline-powered large SUVs, pickup trucks, and European luxury cars that are the least friendly to the environment. There is only one pickup on this list for our readers to worry about. The Toyota Tundra made GreenestCars.org’s Meanest List coming in as the sixth consumer vehicle that is “meanest” to the environment. The Tundra received an EDX of 2.29 and a Green Score of 29.
