BRANCHING OUT

July 27 proved to be a big day for Chevrolet as the company announced the shipment of its new Low Cab Forward (LCF) series. “Chevrolet’s new LCF trucks are now shipping to Chevrolet dealers across the country, marking Chevrolet’s return to the medium-duty market,” according to the company. “The new LCF series strengthens Chevrolet’s expansive truck portfolio, which includes midsize, light-duty, and heavy-duty pickups.”

WHAT TO EXPECT

With the addition of its new LCF series, Chevrolet is making its commercial vehicle lineup stronger than ever. With a range of models from 3500-5500—including the 4500HD, 4500XD, 5500HD, and 5500XD—available with gas or diesel engines and designed for navigating large cargo through city traffic, the new LCFs can make your job easier.
“The Chevrolet LCF has great customer-focused functionality, including a maneuverable Cab Over design for optimal visibility and a tight turning radius for efficient hauling in busy, urban environments,” according to the company.

THE 411: ENGINES

“The new trucks are offered in regular cab and crew cab body styles, with either a 6-liter V8 gas engine, a 3-liter turbo-diesel engine, or a 5.2-liter turbo-diesel engine. All engines are mated to 6-speed automatic transmissions. Class 3 through 5 models are available with maximum GVWR ranges of up to 19,500 lbs,” according to Chevrolet. While the 3500, 3500HD, 4500, 4500HD, 4500XD, and 5500HD offer both cab configurations, the 5500XD is only available in regular cab configuration. Detailed engine specs include:

  • 3500 and 4500 LCFs equipped with a 6-liter V8 gas engine paired with a 6-speed transmission with double overdrive to deliver 297 hp and 372 lb-ft of torque
  • 3500HD LCF equipped with a DOHC 3-liter I-4 4J turbocharged diesel engine paired with a 6-speed transmission with double overdrive to deliver 150 hp and 282 lb-ft of torque

CAB OVER DESIGN

Providing optimal visibility for the driver—an especially useful feature in tight urban areas—the cab is designed for crews that make multiple pickup and deliveries throughout the day. Its easy-access engine compartment allows for quicker, easier routine maintenance. The overall length of the LCFs allow for maximum cargo space while its impressive turning radius gives you added agility to navigate the city.
Fold-down trays that double as a laptop/work area help to maximize cab space and with convenient storage areas in the dash, doors, seatback pockets, overhead shelf, and rear organizer tray, the LCF cab becomes a comfortable mobile workspace.
“Drivers will love this truck because it’s comfortable, versatile, and easy to drive, but the thing that will set us apart for owners/operators and fleet managers is ease of service through a nationwide network of Chevrolet commercial dealers,” says John Schwegman, director of commercial product, General Motors Fleet.

CUSTOMIZATION INFO

Work truck customization is a key element in a fleet’s success. No matter the application, if your truck isn’t equipped with the proper body and spec’d specifically for the job’s needs, then you’re taking time and money away from your business—a fact that Chevrolet is aware of. That’s why the LCF series comes with wheelbases ranging from 109 to 212 inches to accommodate body applications ranging from 10 to 24 ft and are prewired for trailer harness and brakes.
“We’re in the business of helping our commercial customers succeed and a big part of that is providing the vehicle choices they need to efficiently operate their businesses,” says Ed Peper, US vice president, General Motors Fleet. “Our new Low Cab Forward trucks are the answer for our customers who require expansive payload, cargo-hauling capabilities, and exceptional maneuverability.”
Ideal for pickup and delivery, landscaping, construction, and more, and providing comfortable driver and passenger accommodations, Chevrolet’s LCF can take on a multitude of applications.
