9 Tips to Keep Drivers Safe While Working

SMARTDRIVE’S TIPS FOR OUR NATION’S UNSUNG HEROES

While the majority of the world shelters in place, truck drivers continue to work around the clock to ensure much-needed supplies are delivered. The 3.5 million truck drivers in our country are unsung heroes, and in order to keep them healthy and safe during these uncertain times SmartDrive compiled a list of nine tips for drivers.

  1. Disinfect: Start your day by disinfecting both the interior driver space and the frequently touched exterior surfaces around your vehicle
  2. Be Conscientious: Before scheduling a delivery, ask about any illness in the home or at the dock
  3. Wash Your Hands: To keep your hands clean, wash them frequently in hot water for at least 20 seconds, especially when leaving public areas
  4. Practice Social Distancing: Do your best to stay 6 ft—about the length of a truck tire—away from others
  5. Be Transparent: Immediately contact your dispatcher if you feel sick so that alternate plans can be made. Then report to medical professionals
  6. Plan Meals: In order to avoid going into restaurants and truck stops, keep several meals on-hand. If you do have to pick up food, find a restaurant that provides an app for ordering and purchasing food directly from your phone to minimize interactions
  7. Sanitize: Keep hand sanitizer nearby for times you encounter a public surface and can’t wash your hands
  8. Avoid Hand-to-hand Contact: For deliveries and pick-ups, avoid direct contact. If possible, pick up and drop off deliveries on a surface that prevents hand-to-hand contact
  9. Repeat Tip #1: End your day as you began it—disinfect!
