Different jobs require different work trucks. Smaller jobs can use mid-size trucks, while bigger jobs move up to the most popular size, which are light-duty 1500 level trucks. For the biggest jobs that require pickup trucks, heavy-duty level trucks that are 2500 level and above are needed.
For fleets that use Chevrolet vehicles, they offer vehicles in all pickup segments. The mid-size Colorado, the light-duty Silverado 1500, and the heavy-duty Silverado HD (2500 and above).
Modern WorkTruck Solutions was able to drive the 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 4WD LT Crew model recently. The first thing you notice is that this is a lot of truck. It is definitely for those who need a work truck for bigger jobs.
Having tested trucks for many years and seeing the improvements that have occurred over that time, one notices that these vehicles are now luxury vehicles. Obviously it depends on the trim level, but the days of having a bare bones HD vehicle are in the rearview, with even the WT models having all the modern amenities included.
The Silverado HD is no exception, with our tester not only having all the options you would need on an everyday basis but even some you may not always use, yet are nice to have. Trim levels go from WT, to Custom, to LT, LTZ, ZR2, and High Country.
UNDER THE HOOD
Two engine options are available, one gasoline and one diesel. For most the standard 6.6 liter V-8 gasoline engine is enough, with 401 horsepower and 464 pound/feet of torque. For those who need more power, the optional Duramax 6.6L V-8 turbodiesel (which was in our tester) offers 470hp and an eye-catching 975 lb/ft of torque. Both engines are mated to an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission (integrated power take-off version available). All gas engine vehicles have a 36-gallon gas tank, diesel models get varied sizes based on bed and cab configurations (28 to 36 gallons).
CAPABILITIES
Two of the most important aspects of any work pickup truck is the payload and towing capacity. Obviously how the vehicle is built out, with different cab sizes, bed sizes, engine choice, and other options, affects what your specific vehicle can tow or carry.
The maximum available towing by using 5th wheel/gooseneck on a gas engine is 19,080 lbs, with the diesel model capable of 36,000 lbs. Both are achieved with a 3500 model. The max for the 2500 is 22,070 lbs on a crew cab model. Conventional towing maxes out at 20,000 lbs for all diesel models, and 18,700 lbs for 3500 gas models, and 16,000 lbs for 2500 gas models.
Payload numbers go from 3,375 to 3,689 lbs for 2500 gas models, 3,441 to 3,615 lbs for 2500 diesel models. The 3500 models range from 4,324 to 7,234 for gas models, and 4,145 to 6,638 for diesel models.
SAFETY
While there is no substitute for a well-trained driver, many modern trucks offer safety features in droves. With many of those features now being offered as standard. What is offered on the Silverado HD? Automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision assist, follow distance indicator (shown in seconds), and automatic high beam lights.
Other safety features available include an array of cameras to keep your eyes on all aspects of your truck. They include a hitch view, which helps with alignment when connecting a trailer; transparent trailer view; bed view, allowing for a view of what is in the bed; a 360 view, front and rear park assist, rear cross traffic alert, and much more.
INTERIOR AND TECHNOLOGY
WT models are available with cloth or vinyl seats, and with a seven-inch infotainment screen. Moving up to the LT model gives you the option of leather seating (and a heated steering wheel, and heated seats), along with a larger 13.4” infotainment system with Google built in. As you move up the model ladder, the interior becomes more luxurious and offers more and more premium options. One example is a 12.3” driver infotainment center that has three configurable views.
TRAIL BOSS
Available on LT and LTZ models, a Trail Boss package is available. It offers Z71 shock and suspension package; black grille, bumpers, mirrors caps, trim, badges, and skid plate; red recovery hooks; bed decal; 20” black wheels with all terrain tires; and HID LED headlights.
FLEXIBLE TAILGATE
One of the most unique features of the Silverado HD is its available Multi-Flex tailgate, which offers six functions to make loading and unloading the bed easier. The tailgate can open regularly, open a smaller second door that can be used as a standing workstation, or it can be brought all the way down and create a step for easier bed access. With three other locations in between.
