Western Star Combines Good Looks and Toughness in the 4700

BEAUTY MEETS BEAST

Western Star 4700

If you’ve longed to get the job done behind the wheel of a Western Star®, now could be the best time to make that dream come true. The 4700 model was designed and hand-built with a nod to hard-working men and women who rely on their trucks daily for accomplishing tough tasks. The 4700 was geared to be dependable and rugged—yet lighter weight—to save owners and operators money now and over the long haul.

BURLY YET LIGHT

This model is available in set-back and set-forward chassis configurations, with a single or tandem rear axle set, in a 6×2, 6×4, or 4×4 frame setup. Its applications range from municipal snow plow and sewer vacuum to concrete crane and mixer, so Western Star is well aware operators’ needs vary, and aims to accommodate. All while keeping good looks and rugged toughness at the forefront.
“Think of it as a perfect combination between a muscle car, a bulldozer, and a tank,” Guy Lemieux, Western Star district manager, says on the company website. “Its quality construction makes it rugged enough for the toughest jobs, while its beauty turns heads.”

BUILT-IN EXTENSIONS

In fact, vocational applications such as plows and cranes were part of the 4700’s initial concept, Lemieux says, so front frame extensions were part of its design from the start. Extensions measure 12 inches and 24 inches and are part of the parent frame rail.
Underneath the hood, the frame is splayed so it curves around the radiator, allowing it to nestle between the rails, so the sloped hood remains low, and frontal visibility unhampered. The newly designed hood’s shorter overall length combined with a 50-degree wheel cut provides unparalleled maneuverability for getting into—and out of—tight spots.
The truck’s 72-inch-wide cab is designed specifically with safety and convenience in mind, providing greater visibility, loads of storage between the seats and in the doors, and a hinged two-part windshield for ease of servicing and replacement. The windshield can be roped or bonded in, and comes in a heated version to prevent snow and ice from building up on municipal plow applications.

The 4700 is available with half-inch-thick, single-channel frame rails, custom drilled for planned applications. Because they aren’t stacked, they keep corrosion at bay. The truck’s galvannealed steel cabs are bonded instead of riveted, welded for strength, and finished off with a multi-stage e-coat process that resists corrosion and provides a superior paint finish. Both the door and the cab have a weather seal that covers its perimeter. The double seal helps maximize HVAC efficiency and provide a quieter ride.

FEATURES GALORE

Some fresh features asked for and delivered in the newest 4700 are a clean back of cab, in-cab batteries for clear frame rails, and ample space for installing auxiliary equipment between the seats. The 4700 is designed to please even the toughest audience, and incorporates additional features such as a bolt-in pass-through plate in the cab’s floor, which eliminates the need for drilling; a dedicated floor channel with an easily removable top, that provides plenty of space to add wiring; laser-etched and color-coded wires, that make troubleshooting easy; and large, marine-grade rocker switches, which are waterproof and easy to operate with gloves on.
To power this bad boy, there’s a choice of Detroit™ and Cummins engines for the widest range of horsepower ratings for each application. Detroit engines are engineered to deliver power and fuel economy while also meeting today’s efficiency requirements. Each one is 2016 OBD Certified and complies with 2017 Greenhouse Gas regulations, according to a company website brochure. Transmission choices include Eaton Fuller 10-, 11-, 13-, 15- and 18-speed; Eaton Fuller Ultrashift PLUS; and Allison Automatic 3000s, 3500s, 4000s, 4500s, and 4700s.
Every truck endures a rigorous test cycle; now is the perfect time to check out a Western Star 4700 up close and personal.
